S D A (Someone Dies Again)

May 19-28 on Z Space’s Steindler Stage
Produced by the Imaginists
Directed by Árpád Schilling

From acclaimed European director Árpád Schilling, in collaboration with the Imaginists, a Santa Rosa-based theater and performance company, comes S D A (Someone Dies Again). A middle-class family struggles with the task of moving forward while caught in the unbearable past. As tensions rise, the community is forced to take sides. A tragicomic drama, S D A asks the uncomfortable question: How do we know when we could have stopped the inevitable?

The origins of S D A go back to 2014, after a visit to Budapest, when a friendship was struck between Schilling and the Imaginists. Through multiple exchanges, and against the backdrop of Ferguson and the relentless course of mass shootings in the United States, a question emerged. What is the meaning of the gun in American life? Beyond (or beneath) its role in carrying out violence and enforcing oppressive systems, what is its force in shaping American identity, possibility, imagination? These questions percolated in an artistic conversation that has lasted eight years. S D A is a result of that conversation.

Biographies

Árpád Schilling works throughout Europe, creating and directing for theater, opera, film, and community-specific social art projects. His productions have premiered at renowned theaters like the Berliner Ensemble, Opera Stuttgart, Opera Basel, Chaillot National Theatre, and the National Theater of Lithuania, to name a few. Schilling’s work and educational initiatives address pressing societal issues, from racism and xenophobia to freedom of speech and expression. In his native Hungary he became a national figure of the opposition to the divisive and oppressive regime under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his right-wing Fidesz party, organizing huge social justice actions through his now defunct production company Krétakör. A lightning rod for the ultranationalist right in his native country, Schilling and his family left Hungary for France in 2018. schillingarpad.com

The Imaginists is an artist-run performing arts organization that explores the intersection of art and community, honoring the power of live performance as a vital space for questioning, dialogue, and reinvention. The group’s innovative work has led to groundbreaking partnerships with local youth, community members, and artists across disciplines. From community-based projects and educational initiatives to multidisciplinary works and international collaborations, the Imaginists up-end convention, re-imagine public space, and cultivate radical inclusion as they continually re-think theater: who participates, where it happens and...what is it? For more information visit theimaginists.org.
