Word for WordPLAY

Discover the magic of Word for Word, where timeless stories come to life for audiences of all ages.

Word for Word is expanding its unique approach of bringing literature to the stage with Word for WordPLAY, a new program for children and their families. We hope to offer a space where the power of play, self-expression, and imagination takes center stage—inviting families to connect, laugh, and explore together through the magic of literature and theater.

This year, Word for WordPLAY launched with a series of family events that included performances of stories along with other creative activities like theater games, creative craft making, paper snowball fights, face-painting, juggling, puzzles, and more all around fun. In early 2026, Word for WordPLAY is premiering its first production this spring, bringing the same great acting, staging, and design that you've come to expect from Word for Word. Our approach of using every word from beloved texts will bring the infinite creative possibilities of literature and theater to a new generation. Come and join in the fun at Z Space.

Word for WordPLAY and Z Space present:
The Eyes & The Impossible by Dave Eggers

Directed by Delia MacDougall

February 26 - March 15 at Z Space’s Steindler Stage

Z Space and Word for WordPLAY present a bold new stage adaptation of Dave Eggers’ The Eyes & the Impossible (Chapters 1-6). The novel, a winner of the 2024 Newbery Medal for excellence in children’s literature, is described as "a lyrical, soulful book full of wit and passion...a timeless story for readers of all ages." The story takes you to the inner world of Johannes, a free and fast dog—and his job as the "eyes" of an urban park by the sea. Join him in his trials and tribulations as the equilibrium of the park is upset by an influx of humans, construction, and other animals. Experience the fully staged production on Z Space’s Steindler Stage, presented in classic Word for Word style.

Several Bay Area classrooms would like to attend a student matinee of The Eyes & the Impossible, but can’t afford our already considerably reduced student prices without further financial assistance. By making a small donation of just $10 per student, you can help young people experience the magic of literature brought to life on stage in what may be their very first live theater performance.
